MUH 3025 Society, Politics, Race, Identity
In the early 1970s, Marvin Gaye addressed political issues of the war and civil rights with the song “What’s Going On”. Today, Kendrick Lamar is indeed keeping the tradition alive presenting his songs that carry messages of racism and the justice system. For example, Lamar’s album “To Pimp a Butterfly”, and its anthem “Alright”. The lyrical content expresses African Americans’ pride and the hardship they face. He possesses the raw intensity and social commentary in his lyrics, which puts him in the same league as Gaye in contemporary politics’ ongoing relevance, and the social issues that persist in their generations are present today.
