Ballet Term Temps Releve

Jacklyn Dougherty Temps releve [ tahn ruhl-VAY ]. Lifting movement. A term of the Russian School. This is an exercise done at the barre or the centre. It is often used as a preparation for another movement. When it serves as preparation for a pirouette, the working leg does the developpe forward, then is whipped to second position and to sur le cou-de-pied while the supporting leg remains in demi-plie. The dancer immediately does a releve and turns in  pirouette en dehors. Temps releve may be performed en dedans or en dehors at 45 to 90 degrees.
